Cristo Redentor initiates environmental impact compensation plan
The Santuário do Cristo Redentor has signed an agreement with Green Initiative International to begin a process for international climate certification. The initiative aims to assess and mitigate the environmental impact caused by tourism at the iconic Brazilian monument.
Following a record-breaking year in 2025, where approximately 1.5 million people visited the site, the sanctuary plans to identify daily emissions and calculate carbon capture from the surrounding Atlantic Forest. The goal is to achieve either 'Climate Positive' or 'Carbon Neutral' certification. A 'Climate Positive' status would mean compensation measures exceed emissions, while 'Carbon Neutral' would indicate emissions are fully offset.
The resulting data will form a Climate Action Plan featuring short- and medium-term mitigation measures. This effort seeks to compensate for greenhouse gas emissions accumulated over nearly a century of tourism, as the monument approaches its centenary in 2031.
