Cristo Redentor international pass reopens for cargo transport
The Cristo Redentor and Los Libertadores international mountain passes between Argentina and Chile reopened on Monday, August 31, following delays caused by adverse weather conditions. Although authorities initially postponed the reopening due to safety concerns in the high mountains, the crossing officially resumed operations at 11:00 local time after technical teams from both countries' road departments confirmed the route was passable.
The reopening is currently limited to cargo transport only. Private vehicles, buses, and tourists remain prohibited from using the pass until further notice. The closure had left more than 250 trucks stranded at various control points along the international corridor.
Manuel Rivera, the Mayor of Los Andes, noted the economic impact of these frequent weather-related interruptions and called for improved protocols and technology to manage border connectivity more effectively in the face of climate change.
