Cáritas Dominicana celebrates 65 years of community service

Cáritas Dominicana is celebrating its 65th anniversary, marking over six decades of service to vulnerable populations. Founded on September 19, 1961, by the Conference of the Dominican Episcopate, the organization has transitioned from a model of immediate humanitarian assistance to one focused on community accompaniment and long-term autonomy.

Key achievements and current initiatives include impacting over 2.3 million people throughout its history. In 2026 alone, the organization has reached more than 700 families, benefited 63 communities, installed over 75 gardens, and distributed more than 300 animals to strengthen local livelihoods. Additionally, the organization operates more than 25 community pharmacies.

Director Juan Manuel Díaz noted that the organization’s mission involves walking alongside communities to create conditions for dignity and opportunity. Beyond domestic work, Cáritas Dominicana has also provided solidarity responses to climate-related disasters, such as earthquakes in Jamaica, Cuba, and Venezuela.
