Cáritas reports rising homelessness crisis across Spain

Cáritas has reported a significant increase in homelessness across Spain, noting that the organization accompanied 44,475 people in 2025, a 3.8% increase from the previous year. This trend is driven by structural factors including rising housing costs, job losses, evictions, and forced migration.

In Andalusia, Cáritas assisted nearly 5,000 people, with 85% being men and the majority aged between 35 and 60. In Huelva, the organization noted a concerning trend where the percentage of women experiencing homelessness has tripled over the last six years, now representing 33% of those served. In Seville, officials warned that housing inflation is pushing middle-class families toward the poverty threshold.

Regional reports from Cuenca and Mérida-Badajoz further highlight the crisis. In Cuenca, 458 people received assistance this year, while in Mérida-Badajoz, 87 individuals successfully transitioned from the streets to housing through Cáritas programs. To mark the Day of Homeless People on October 25, Cáritas has launched the campaign ‘A home is much more than a place to live, it is a place to belong’ to advocate for better public housing and social protection policies.
