Critical mineral competition intensifies between Western firms and China
Western mining firms and European regulators are intensifying efforts to secure critical mineral supplies to compete with Chinese dominance in the electric vehicle, defense, and artificial intelligence sectors.
KoBold Metals President Josh Goldman stated that Western miners can match the pace of Chinese competitors in Africa if governments streamline regulatory approvals and improve coordination. The California-based firm, backed by Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, is currently seeking faster exploration approvals in Namibia and expanding lithium and copper operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In Europe, the implementation of the Critical Raw Materials Act aims to reshore production, setting targets for domestic extraction, processing, and recycling. While the legislation provides benefits like mandated permitting timelines, junior miners note that support needs to extend beyond top-tier projects to effectively meet the EU's strategic goals.
