Artificial intelligence poses copyright and cognitive risks

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence presents significant legal and cognitive challenges. In newsrooms, the use of AI raises complex copyright concerns. While using AI is not inherently an infringement, risks depend on the training data used, the specific inputs provided by journalists, and the similarity of the output to existing works. This poses a particular risk to smaller publishers who may lack the legal resources of larger corporations.

Beyond legalities, there are growing concerns regarding the impact of AI on human cognition. Experts warn of “cognitive offloading” or “digital dementia,” where over-reliance on AI for problem-solving and information retrieval may weaken analytical thinking and decision-making abilities. Neuroscientist Prof. Türker Kılıç notes that intelligence is defined by the ability to form complex connections rather than just storing information, suggesting that excessive reliance on automated answers could diminish the brain's capacity for deep thought.
