Brazilian high courts undergo leadership transitions

Brazil is undergoing several leadership transitions within its highest courts. Minister Cármen Lúcia has been elected to preside over the First Chamber of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), succeeding Minister Flávio Dino. She is scheduled to officially assume the presidency on September 30, following the court's internal rotation system.

In a separate transition, Minister Luis Felipe Salomão is taking office as the president of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) for the 2026-2028 biennium, with Minister Mauro Campbell Marques serving as vice-president. The ceremony for the STJ leadership includes the presence of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and other high-ranking officials.

Regarding future leadership at the STF, Minister Alexandre de Moraes is slated to assume the presidency of the Supreme Court in September 2027, succeeding Minister Edson Fachin.

In recent public remarks, Minister Cármen Lúcia defended press freedom as a constitutional pillar of democracy and emphasized the importance of protecting source confidentiality. During a lecture at PUC-SP, she also spoke on the relationship between law and democracy, urging citizens not to relinquish their rights.
