Cármen Lúcia elected president of Venice Commission subcommission
Brazilian Supreme Federal Court Minister Cármen Lúcia has been unanimously elected as the president of the Venice Commission's Subcommission for Latin America. This appointment makes her the first non-European to lead the body, which serves as a consultative organ for the Council of Europe on constitutional matters.
In her new role, Lúcia will work to strengthen institutional and technical cooperation between the Venice Commission and Latin American nations. The subcommission focuses on promoting the exchange of best practices regarding constitutional law, democracy, and the rule of law, while providing technical support to constitutional courts and studying constitutional reforms.
During recent institutional meetings in Venice, Italy, Lúcia also participated in discussions regarding fundamental rights, minority protections, and parliamentary ethics. Her agenda included addressing domestic violence against Brazilian women living in the region and discussing Brazilian jurisprudence aimed at preventing the re-victimization of survivors during institutional procedures.
