Croatia advances €150 million Piškornica waste centre project

The Ministry of Environment and Green Transition, led by Minister Marija Vučković, visited the Koprivnica‑Križevci County to review the Piškornica Regional Waste Management Centre. In a meeting with County Prefect Tomislav Golubić and other officials, the minister received an update that the project is about half‑way through its contracted value, with works amounting to roughly €89 million of the total €150 million budget (including VAT). Trial operations are expected in early 2025, with full commissioning planned for the end of 2027.

Piškornica will handle mixed municipal waste for around 500,000 residents across four northern counties, aiming to cut CO₂ emissions by 45,000 tonnes and reduce the share of mixed waste sent to landfill to 10 % by 2035. Financing combines European Union funds, national ministry contributions and a loan from the Croatian Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

The project is presented as one of Croatia’s largest and most valuable strategic waste‑management initiatives, supporting the nation’s climate and circular‑economy goals.
