Croatia advocates for production-linked agricultural support at EU Council
At the EU Council of Ministers for Agriculture and Fisheries in Luxembourg, Croatia emphasized the necessity of maintaining production-linked supports and simplifying regulations for farmers. Minister David Vlajčić stated that the country is advocating for budget preservation, increased flexibility for member states, and rules that allow young people to sustain themselves through farming.
During the meeting, a partial common approach was reached regarding the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) regulation for the 2028–2034 period. Croatia also supported a declaration from the Visegrad Group aimed at combating unfair trade practices, calling on the European Commission to consider banning the sale of agricultural and food products at prices below production costs.
Additionally, Croatia backed Italy’s request for extraordinary assistance within the CAP to mitigate rising fuel and fertilizer costs, noting that such aid should involve additional European funds rather than just redistributing existing CAP resources. The discussions also highlighted the need for more effective European responses to natural disasters and market crises.
