Croatia agriculture must be a matter of national security, warns SDP MP
Mato Vukušić, a Member of Parliament from the SDP, has warned that Croatian agriculture must be treated as a matter of national and strategic security due to global geopolitical shifts. Speaking at a fair in Gudovcu, Vukušić highlighted a decline in domestic agricultural production despite significant financial input.
Vukušić noted that Croatia's average food self-sufficiency stands at approximately 55 percent, with milk production meeting only about 40 percent of domestic demand. He cited state audit data indicating that roughly seven billion euros from European sources have been spent on the sector over the last 13 years, yet results have been insufficient.
The SDP representative criticized the government of Prime Minister Andrej Plenković regarding the distribution of agricultural funds and the management of land. He specifically opposed regulatory changes that facilitate the sale of agricultural land to foreigners, linking these moves to Croatia's efforts to join the OECD. To address these issues, Vukušić proposed consolidating agricultural land and establishing regional distribution centers for fruits and vegetables.
