Croatia Airlines records record passenger traffic, reports €50 million loss
Croatia Airlines carried a record 981,482 passengers in the first half of 2026, a 15 % increase over the same period a year earlier and the highest passenger volume in the carrier’s history. The surge was driven by growth in both domestic (up 6 %) and international (up 18 %) scheduled services, raising the airline’s market share and lifting the passenger load factor to 66.2 %, 2.7 percentage points higher than in the first half of 2025.
The airline is in the midst of its largest fleet renewal ever, adding two new Airbus A220 aircraft in the first half of the year and planning to receive a total of 14 A220s by year‑end. The newer fleet is expected to improve fuel efficiency, lower emissions and simplify maintenance, but the transition has also raised operating costs.
Operating expenses rose 22 % year‑on‑year, driven by higher fuel prices, increased maintenance, and the impact of a stronger US dollar on financing and exchange‑rate differences. Despite a 12 % rise in operating revenue, the carrier posted a net loss of €49.7 million for the period, including a €36.8 million operating loss and additional €13 million from adverse currency effects.
