Hungary's used‑car imports jump 25% as forint strengthens
By the end of July, 91,343 used cars imported from abroad received Hungarian licence plates, a 25 % year‑on‑year increase. Registrations rose to 15,779 in July (+38.1 %) and 14,471 in June (+41.9 %).
Industry officials attribute the surge to the recent strengthening of the forint, which lets dealers purchase many models 15‑20 % cheaper than a year earlier. Despite the higher import volume, domestic used‑car prices are falling, limiting profit gains for dealers.
Volkswagen led the imported‑used‑car market in the first seven months with a 13.7 % share, followed by Ford (8.4 %) and Opel (7.3 %). The market also sees growing demand for small cars and the C‑SUV segment. The foreign history of many imported vehicles remains opaque, while Hungarian‑registered cars benefit from a free online vehicle‑history check.
