Croatia and Serbia military forces compared in strength and equipment

The armed forces of the Republic of Croatia and the Republic of Serbia are the two most prominent militaries in the Balkans, but they follow markedly different defence strategies. Croatia, a NATO member since 2009, maintains a professional force of about 15,000‑20,000 active personnel and roughly 20,000 reservists, emphasizing interoperability with NATO, modern technology and high‑precision artillery such as the German PzH 2000 and French Caesar 155 mm howitzers.

Serbia, pursuing a policy of military neutrality, fields a larger army of roughly 30,000‑32,000 active troops and about 50,000 reservists. Its ground strength relies on a greater number of main battle tanks—over 240, including M‑84, M‑84AS1 and T‑72 models—and a wide array of self‑propelled artillery like the Nora B‑52, as well as domestically produced armoured vehicles such as Lazar 3 and Miloš. The comparison highlights Serbia’s numerical advantage and heavier armour versus Croatia’s smaller, more technologically integrated force.
