Croatia and Serbia roll out new regional waste‑separation programmes

The Brod‑Posavina County administration in Croatia has opened a public consultation on a draft programme for separate waste collection covering 2024‑2029. The draft aims to coordinate waste‑separation efforts across municipalities, set guidelines for future development and introduce incentive payments for municipalities that miss collection targets, prompting concerns about additional administrative and financial burdens for citizens.

In Serbia, the Regional Waste Management Centre in Pirot is expanding its capacity and introducing upgraded facilities to process biodegradable and green waste into high‑quality humus. The centre now serves four municipalities—Pirot, Babušnica, Bela Palanka and Dimitrovgrad—and plans to complete a second sanitary landfill, allowing residents to deliver biodegradable waste free of charge. Both initiatives seek to align local practices with European standards and improve recycling outcomes.
