Croatia and Slovakia adjust residential renewable energy subsidies

Croatia and Slovakia are implementing significant changes to their residential renewable energy subsidy programs.

In Croatia, a €38 million household subsidy program was temporarily closed just two days after its launch due to overwhelming demand. The program received 9,320 applications in that short window, with the majority being for rooftop solar photovoltaic installations. Approximately 1,460 of these applications also included battery energy storage systems. The scheme offers standard households up to 50% of eligible investment costs, while energy-poor households can receive up to 70%.

Slovakia is restructuring its ‘Green Households’ program through the Innovation and Energy Agency (SIEA). The agency is shifting from a voucher-based system to direct cash payments to simplify the process. As part of this overhaul, the maximum grant for rooftop solar will be reduced from €4,025 to €1,150, and supported capacity will drop from up to 7 kW to 2 kW. This shift aims to encourage on-site consumption rather than electricity export. Conversely, support for other technologies is increasing, with heat pump grants rising from €4,370 to €4,600.
