Croatia animal welfare groups call for veterinary inspection reform

Friends of Animals, a Croatian animal‑rights organisation, says the state’s veterinary inspection system repeatedly fails to prevent neglect, abuse and high mortality in shelters. The group highlights cases of injured dogs left on chains, non‑transparent shelters, poisoning and unregistered breeding, noting that citizen reports often receive no response.

Since 2012 the organisation has urged the creation of a dedicated animal‑protection inspection body that would cooperate with shelters, veterinary stations, local authorities and police. It plans a protest on 27 June 2026 in Zagreb’s Trg kralja Tomislava, demanding reform of the veterinary inspection, enforcement of the animal‑protection law, systematic micro‑chip control, and expanded neutering programmes.
