Croatia approves €160 million electronic toll system
The Croatian government has given the green light to a €160‑million project to replace traditional toll booths with a digital Free‑Flow system on its motorways. Funding will come from the EU Recovery Fund (NPOO) – €115.6 million – and the state highway company Hrvatske autoceste (HAC), which will cover the remaining €44.9 million. Vehicles will pass toll stations without stopping; cameras will read licence plates and drivers may also use an electronic toll box, which remains mandatory for trucks and buses over 3.5 tonnes. The rollout begins in autumn 2026, with full implementation scheduled for 1 March 2027. Fees stay distance‑based and no vignette system like in Austria or Slovenia is planned. The project also includes sections operated by concessionaires Autocesta Zagreb‑Macelj and BINA Istra.
