Croatia: Court rulings involve DUI accident and military fraud
Two separate legal rulings in Croatia have resulted in convictions for fraud and driving under the influence.
A man from Međimurje has been sentenced to eight months in prison for a December 2024 traffic accident in Čakovec. The individual, who had a blood alcohol content of at least 1.20 per mille after consuming five beers, crossed into the oncoming lane and collided with a neighbor. The victim sustained serious injuries, including multiple rib fractures. The court has suspended the prison sentence in favor of 480 hours of community service and a one-year driving ban.
In a separate case, a 44-year-old former military officer has been sentenced to one year in prison, suspended for three years, for long-term fraud against the Ministry of Defence. Between 2011 and 2023, the individual falsely claimed commuting expenses for the Našice–Doljani route by providing incorrect residency information. The court ordered the defendant to repay 25,475.91 euros to the state.
