Croatia details age and contribution rules for retirement pensions
In Croatia, entitlement to an old‑age pension requires the insured to reach the statutory retirement age and have at least 15 years of pension‑insurance contributions. The standard retirement age is 65, while a special provision allows long‑service pensioners to retire at 60 if they have 41 years of recorded contributions.
During the transition period from 2020 to 2029, women may retire earlier than men under more favourable conditions, but the age threshold gradually rises. From 1 January 2030, men and women will qualify for the old‑age pension under identical requirements.
From 1 January 2026, persons aged 65 who are self‑employed, freelancers, caregivers or similar may claim the pension without first ending their activity. Claims must be filed within six months of the end of employment; otherwise the pension is payable retroactively from the first day of the month following the application.
The legislation also reduces the retirement‑age threshold for those with accelerated insurance periods, lowering the required age by one year for each specified increment of contributed service.
