Croatia emergency medical helicopter operations highlight infrastructure needs

Emergency medical helicopters have conducted several urgent operations in Croatia, highlighting both the necessity of rapid air transport and infrastructure challenges in certain regions.

In Bjelovar, emergency helicopters landed twice in a single day on a meadow near the City Stadium rather than at the hospital. This follows a pattern of five helicopter interventions in just six days across Bjelovar, Rovisch, and Šandrovac. The incidents have renewed scrutiny regarding the new Dr. Anđelko Višić General Hospital, a facility costing over 36 million euros that lacks its own helipad.

Separately, the Croatian Air Force conducted a critical medical mission using a Mi-171 Sh military helicopter. The crew of the 395th Transport Helicopter Squadron transported a critically ill pregnant woman from the Split Clinical Hospital Center to the Dubrava Clinical Hospital in Zagreb to ensure she received necessary medical care.
