Croatia expands AI wildfire detection system with 50 new cameras

Croatia has expanded its early wildfire detection system by adding 50 surveillance cameras across 25 new locations. The expansion focuses on protected areas, including national parks and nature parks, to enhance the ability to detect fires, assess their development, and facilitate rapid field responses.

The system utilizes artificial intelligence with advanced algorithms designed to automatically recognize smoke and flames, providing reliable detection both day and night. It also integrates meteorological data to improve risk assessment and operational decision-making. The surveillance will operate 24/7 year-round, with data transmitted to regional fire control centers.

This initiative is part of a project to establish a focal point for coordinated climate change adaptation policies. The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition noted that the investment is critical due to the increasing frequency and intensity of climate-related fires, which threaten populations, property, and natural ecosystems.
