Croatia expands gas interconnector and green grid for AI data centre

Croatia’s gas transmission operator Plinacro and Hungary’s FGSZ have agreed to double the capacity of the Drávaszerdahely‑Alsómiholjác border crossing from 200,000 to 400,000 standard cubic metres per hour. The upgrade, slated for completion by 31 December 2026, is intended to strengthen gas supply security for Hungary and the wider region and to facilitate larger LNG flows from Croatia.

Separately, Croatia’s transmission system operator HOPS has approved Pantheon Atlas’s 400 kV transmission blueprint for a 1 GW AI data‑centre campus in Topusko. The plan includes a 500 MW solar PV plant, an 8,000 MWh battery storage system, more than €500 million in transmission investment, 280 km of new lines and a 400 kV substation. Upon completion, the infrastructure will be transferred to the Republic of Croatia and is expected to ease grid constraints and enable over 5 GW of additional renewable generation.
