Croatian highways jammed as summer traffic and accidents create long queues

Heavy summer tourism has led to severe congestion on Croatia’s main highways. Accidents on the A1 near the Demerje toll plaza and inside the Sveti Rok tunnel forced traffic to use a single lane, creating three‑kilometre queues, while the A2 near the Bajakovo border also saw delays. The Krk bridge experienced a 13‑kilometre queue, and the Bosiljevo II interchange reported up to five kilometres of backup.

Hrvatske autoceste (HAC) recorded over 140 000 vehicles on the weekend, more than 10 000 above the previous year, and called it the first “real peak weekend.” toll‑station queues at Lučko and Demerje stretched to about two kilometres. Border crossings with Serbia reported passenger vehicle waits of up to three hours and freight waits of up to two hours, especially at the Gradina checkpoint.

In neighboring Slovenia, a major incident closed the Šentvid tunnel, causing traffic jams on several motorway sections and detours for freight traffic. The combined congestion across the region highlights the pressure on road infrastructure during the peak tourist season.
