Croatia extends deadline for short-term rental regularization

The Croatian government has approved a legislative proposal that extends the deadline for private short-term accommodation providers to regularize their status. Provisional authorizations, which were previously set to expire at the end of 2026, will now remain valid until December 31, 2030.

This measure affects approximately 15,000 family-run accommodation operators. Prime Minister Andrej Plenković stated the goal is to modernize sector regulations, combat unregistered activities, and protect legal operators. Tourism Minister Tonči Glavina noted the extension aims to preserve the livelihoods of small property owners by providing adequate time to complete the transition to definitive permits.

The new legislation also introduces a more digitalized framework through the eTurizam system to reduce paperwork and improve transparency. Under the proposed rules, properties advertised on international booking platforms must obtain a registration number. To ensure compliance, online platforms could face significant penalties, ranging from €13,000 to €130,000 or 1% to 6% of financial revenue, if they fail to verify accommodation providers or provide required information.
