Croatia battles intense wildfires across Dalmatia and Brač

Croatia is facing an exceptionally demanding wildfire season, with firefighting forces deployed across multiple regions including Dalmatia, Brač, Pelješac, and Omiš. Large-scale interventions have been required to combat significant blazes, such as the fire near Lokva Rogoznica which affected approximately 1,000 hectares, and a fire in Pučišća on Brač that burned 250 hectares of pine forest.

Aerial support has played a critical role, with Canadair and Air Tractor aircraft performing numerous sorties. Colonel Milan Došen, commander of the 855th Firefighting Squadron, noted that the intensity of the season is among the highest in recent years, with the squadron recording approximately 800 flight hours—nearly double the amount from the same period last year.

Ground crews from various counties, including Krapina-Zagorje and Bjelovarsko-Bilogora, have been dispatched to assist local authorities. While some areas like Pelješac have seen stabilization in fire activity, officials remain on high alert due to dry conditions and strong winds. Authorities have also issued warnings against the dangerous use of fireworks, which have previously triggered fires in inaccessible terrain.
