Croatia Gender Equality Committee addresses support for domestic violence survivors
The Croatian Gender Equality Committee held a thematic session to discuss the challenges faced by women who have survived domestic or partner violence. Initiated by the Women's Network of Croatia, the meeting highlighted the significant gap between legally guaranteed rights and their practical accessibility in daily life.
Committee President Marija Lugarić noted that leaving a violent relationship often triggers a new period of hardship, as survivors must simultaneously secure housing, income, and childcare. She emphasized that protection should not depend on a woman's county of residence, her financial status, or her ability to navigate complex administrative procedures.
Sanja Juras of the Women's Network of Croatia presented an analysis of the availability of services and rights. The findings indicated specific obstacles, including difficulties with residency registration, employment access, and finding safe housing. Notably, 26 local and regional government units lack specific procedures for the rapid adjustment of residency for women fleeing violent environments, which can impact their access to benefits and childcare.
