Croatia halts illegal waste dumping in Mičevec and Lički Osik

State inspectors in Croatia confirmed irregularities at a construction waste site in Mičevec, near Zagreb. The Environment Inspection received a complaint that construction debris from a Zagreb site was being illegally deposited on several parcels of land. The inspection, citing waste‑management law, ordered immediate oversight and referred the case to the municipal police. The Mining Inspection also intervened, finding unlawful mineral extraction on the same parcels and imposing administrative and criminal measures, effectively stopping the illegal digging.

In a separate case in the Lika region, an abandoned industrial complex in Lički Osik has been alleged to contain hazardous waste, including PFAS compounds, cyanide and heavy metals. Parliamentarian Marin Miletić called for independent laboratory analyses and pledged to clean the area, noting that a donor is ready to fund testing in European labs. He warned that if the waste is confirmed as dangerous, responsible parties could face criminal prosecution.
