Croatia health officials warn of rising sedative misuse among youth
Medical professionals in Croatia are warning of a dangerous trend among young people who are increasingly using tablets, primarily sedatives, as an alternative to alcohol for relaxation and social activities. This trend, often promoted on social media, is becoming a significant public health issue.
Doctors report that youth are frequently accessing medications such as sedatives, epilepsy drugs, and heart medications from household supplies. This shift is driven by the perception that psychoactive substances are a healthier and cheaper alternative to alcohol, which is viewed as being high in calories and cost.
Emergency medical staff at KBC Zagreb note that overdoses are contributing to a significant portion of emergency room admissions. Data indicates a rise in the consumption of certain substances, with pregabalin use increasing by nearly 12 percent per 1,000 inhabitants between 2014 and 2024, while benzodiazepines like diazepam and alprazolam remain among the most frequently prescribed.
