Croatia: HNB warns of pension scams and journalists face threats

The Croatian National Bank (HNB) has issued a warning regarding deceptive online content and social media posts. These fraudulent articles falsely claim that HNB Governor Ante Žigman is promoting a fictitious national pension savings program via the portal mirovinsko.hr, which is allegedly under the supervision of the HNB and the Croatian Financial Services Supervisory Agency (Hanfa).

The HNB clarified that neither the institution nor its officials participate in the promotion of specific financial services, investments, or cryptocurrencies. Citizens are urged to remain cautious, avoid falling for these scams, and report suspicious content to relevant platforms or the HNB directly.

Separately, Hrvoje Zovko, President of the Croatian Journalists' Association (HND), highlighted the precarious situation facing media professionals in Croatia. He reported that the HND has documented approximately 200 attacks and threats against journalists over the last ten years.

Zovko also addressed the economic challenges in the sector, noting significant income disparities. An HND survey of 127 journalists revealed that 13.6 percent of respondents earn less than 500 euros per month, while 12.8 percent earn between 501 and 1000 euros.
