Croatia Homeland War: Accounts of casualties in Ogulin and Karlobag

Commemorations and personal accounts highlight the human cost of the Homeland War in Croatia, specifically regarding casualties in the Ogulin and Karlobag regions.

In the Ogulin area, records note the death of Josip Luketić, a member of the 143rd Brigade, who died in 1993 after being wounded by an anti-aircraft machine gun. Reports from that period describe difficult frontline conditions characterized by mud, moisture, and exhaustion due to low soldier numbers. Other casualties from the region include Mato Brozović, who died in 1991, and members of the National Defense units during intense shelling in Modruš.

In Karlobag, personal testimony recounts a 1991 air raid on civilian targets. Vlatko Stilinović describes the loss of his brother, Ivan, during an attack on the Hotel Zagreb complex. The attack, carried out by JNA aircraft, involved multiple rocket strikes on a location housing approximately 1,000 people, including children playing on the beach. Despite the presence of a Red Cross sign, the strike resulted in fatalities and injuries among the civilian population.
