Croatia implements stricter waste management to combat illegal dumping

Croatia is facing significant challenges regarding illegal waste disposal and the inefficiency of its waste management system. Authorities have announced stricter oversight, including GPS tracking for vehicles and video surveillance of locations, to improve traceability and prevent illegal dumping.

In Donji Miholjac, an inspection following citizen reports led to the announced suspension of a landfill's operations and proceedings to revoke its waste management permit. The political party Možemo has urged citizens to continue reporting illegal sites via a dedicated email address to prevent further environmental damage.

Architects from the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) suggest that Croatia could learn from Denmark's approach to waste. They highlight CopenHill in Copenhagen, a facility that converts waste into energy while serving as a public recreational space with a rooftop ski slope, transforming industrial infrastructure into a city attraction.
