Croatia leads in organ transplantation success rates
Croatia has established itself as a global leader in organ donation and transplantation. At the University Hospital Centre Zagreb (KBC Zagreb), liver transplant patients achieve a one-year survival rate exceeding 95%, a figure that ranks among the best internationally.
To mark European Organ Donation Day, medical professionals highlighted the country's high volume of successful procedures. KBC Zagreb performs approximately 40 liver transplants annually, averaging one procedure per week. The hospital's multidisciplinary transplant program also includes heart, kidney, and lung transplants.
In addition to clinical achievements, various regional initiatives were held to raise awareness. In Varaždin, the first ‘Tree of Life’ was planted as a permanent symbol of gratitude to donors. In Čakovec, the Association of Dialyzed and Transplanted Kidney Patients organized informative campaigns to encourage public discussion on the importance of donation and to provide support for those awaiting transplants.
