Croatia offers advice to lower car air‑conditioning fuel use and freezer energy waste

Experts in Croatia explain that running a car’s air‑conditioning system adds roughly 5 % to 15 % to fuel consumption, with gasoline engines affected more than diesel. In city traffic the increase can reach 0.3–1 L per 100 km for petrol cars and 0.2–0.6 L for diesel. Recommended practices include opening windows for a minute after parking in the sun, setting cabin temperature to 22‑24 °C, limiting the temperature difference with the outside, and maintaining the cabin‑air filter.

Separate advice addresses freezer ice buildup, which reduces compressor efficiency and raises electricity bills. Ice forms when warm, moist air enters the freezer – often due to frequent door opening or poorly sealed food packages. To prevent it, users should store food in airtight containers, avoid unnecessary door openings, keep the freezer reasonably stocked but not overfilled, and periodically defrost and clean the unit. Some suggest applying a very thin layer of oil to interior walls after cleaning to discourage moisture adhesion. These steps help keep the appliance running efficiently and lower household energy costs.
