Croatia orders anti-fascist groups to vacate Zagreb building for renovation
The Croatian Ministry of Physical Planning, Construction and State Assets has requested that the Alliance of Anti-Fascist Fighters and Anti-Fascists (SABA RH) and several affiliated organizations vacate a building on Hatzova Street in Zagreb by September 1. The eviction is intended to facilitate a comprehensive structural renovation of the building, which was damaged during the 2020 earthquake.
The Ministry stated that an agreement was reached with current users regarding the September 1 deadline and that public procurement for the renovation documentation and works is being prepared. However, the Ministry did not provide specific details regarding the timeline of the works, the estimated cost, or whether alternative premises would be offered.
Representatives from SABA RH and other anti-fascist groups, including the Network of Anti-Fascist Women Zagreb (MAZ) and the Josip Broz Tito Societies of Croatia, expressed significant concerns. They noted that no replacement property has been offered and that the Ministry's correspondence provides no guarantees that they will be allowed to return to the building once the renovations are complete.
