Bank SMS phishing scams affect Bosnia, Croatia and Montenegro
Police in Bosnia and Herzegovina reported that a woman in Brod lost 780 convertible marks after following a fraudulent SMS that appeared to be from her bank and entered her card details on a fake website. The police warned citizens to verify any message asking for personal or banking data.
In Croatia, authorities warned of a wave of SMS frauds that have emptied the accounts of several citizens, with reported losses exceeding €23,700. Cases include a 41‑year‑old woman in Zadar who was duped into updating a banking app via a link, and multiple incidents involving messages that pretended to be from OTP Bank. The Croatian Post also issued alerts about similar scams.
Montenegro’s police issued comparable warnings, urging people not to respond to SMS messages that threaten account blockages unless personal data are updated. They emphasized that banks never request such information through text messages and advised contacting banks directly for verification.
