Croatia proposes stricter traffic fines and new road safety laws

Croatian Interior Minister Davor Božinović has proposed significant amendments to the Road Traffic Safety Act aimed at reducing accidents and fatalities. The proposed changes include substantial increases in fines for various violations.

Key proposed penalties include 200 euros for not wearing a seatbelt and 300 euros for improper parking that obstructs traffic. For illegal street racing, organizers and participants could face fines between 2,000 and 5,000 euros, potential imprisonment of up to 60 days, vehicle seizure, and driving bans. New regulations also target electric scooters, with parents facing fines of 1,000 to 3,000 euros if they allow children under 14 to operate them, and penalties for using scooters that exceed legal technical limits.

Additionally, the proposal introduces fines of 800 to 2,000 euros for drivers who record and publish their own traffic violations on social media. The measures are intended to improve road culture and safety rather than simply increasing state revenue. The amendments will undergo a 30-day public consultation period.
