Croatia's top sun‑loving terrace plants for the summer

A gardening guide for Croatian homeowners lists six plants that thrive in sunny containers and require minimal care. Coleus provides bold foliage in shades of green, burgundy, copper and multicolour, while petunias deliver a splash of colour but need frequent watering in heat. Ornamental grasses such as Festuca glauca, Nassella tenuissima and Pennisetum ‘Rubrum’ resist drought and can stay in pots year‑round. Begonias, especially the ‘Dragon Wing’ variety, need daily moisture but flower abundantly once established. Pelargoniums tolerate high temperatures and need watering every other day in hot spots. Gomphrena ‘Fireworks’ grows quickly, adding height with light, airy blooms.

The guide also highlights Portulaca grandiflora (commonly called “prkos”), a low‑lying succulent from South America that endures intense sun and heat with little water, blooms continuously from June to the first frosts, and self‑sows, making it a low‑maintenance choice for bright terraces.

All six species are recommended for hanging baskets or potted arrangements on terraces that receive full sun, with advice on soil, spacing, fertiliser and occasional watering to keep plants vibrant through late summer.
