Gospić waste scandal triggers political crisis in Croatia

A political crisis has emerged in Croatia following revelations that the Security and Intelligence Agency (SOA) possessed information regarding illegal hazardous waste disposal in Gospić as early as 2022. While SOA maintains it acted legally by notifying competent investigative and prosecutorial bodies, high-ranking officials, including President Zoran Milanović, Speaker Gordan Jandroković, and the Government, state they were never personally informed of the suspicions.

The situation has escalated into a major political confrontation. The Croatian Government rejected a motion from 54 opposition lawmakers to initiate a vote of no confidence against Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, dismissing the proposal as an unsuccessful PR stunt intended to cause political damage rather than protect the environment.

Environmental concerns are mounting as reports indicate elevated levels of PFAS (forever chemicals) in the blood of residents in Gospić. The illegal waste issue has also sparked broader protests across Croatia, with citizens expressing concerns over institutional corruption and the potential for widespread health and ecological consequences.
