Croatia reports 25 daily deaths due to smoking
The Croatian Institute of Public Health has reported that 25 people die every day in Croatia due to smoking. The adult smoking rate in the country stands at 38 percent, which is significantly higher than the European Union average of approximately 24 percent. Among citizens aged 25 to 34, the smoking rate exceeds 40 percent.
Beyond the human toll, the economic impact is substantial, with annual healthcare costs related to smoking reaching half a billion euros. The habit also affects the economy through long-term sick leave, reduced work capacity, and early retirement.
At a national conference in Šibenik, experts discussed comprehensive approaches to tobacco control, including public health campaigns, prevention, tax policies, and support for those attempting to quit. Additionally, data indicates a rise in the use of e-cigarettes and other new tobacco products among young people.
