Croatia researchers develop sheep wool fertiliser

Scientists at the Institute of Agriculture and Tourism in Poreč are researching ways to convert Croatia’s annual surplus of 900 tonnes of sheep wool into organic fertiliser. The project, titled “Sheep Wool Pellets – Future Choice in Sustainable Vegetable Production” (InoBioPov), aims to transform discarded wool into pellets that provide nutrients and assist in soil moisture retention.

Currently, Croatia lacks an organized system for collecting and managing sheep wool after shearing, often leaving farmers with a difficult-to-dispose-of waste product. The research seeks to address both waste management issues and the agricultural demand for sustainable alternatives to synthetic fertilisers.
