Croatia Restores Nearly 50 Cultural Institutions After Zagreb Earthquake

The Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media reports that, through multiple funds, it has restored almost 50 museums, libraries, reading rooms, museum storage facilities, archives and archival depots in Zagreb and seven surrounding counties that were damaged by the Zagreb and Petrinja earthquakes. Completed works include the Croatian Natural History Museum, the Archaeological Museum in the Vranyczany‑Dobrinović Palace, the Klovićevi dvori Gallery and the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum. The Ministry also finished the Atelier Meštrović and is close to completing the Museum Mimara project, one of the most complex restorations.

Ongoing projects involve the main building of the National Museum of Modern Art, both sites of the Croatian History Museum, and seven of eight buildings of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. By year‑end, the ministry expects to open the refurbished Gliptoteka HAZU, the restored HAZU palace on Strossmayer Square, and the renovated Villa Erlich housing the Croatian Museum of Architecture.
