Croatia retail schedules vary due to Sunday shopping laws

In Croatia, Sunday shopping schedules are determined by specific legal regulations that limit retail chains and shopping centers to a maximum of 16 working Sundays per calendar year. Because individual businesses choose their own schedule within these limits, availability varies significantly by region and season.

Coastal retailers in Istria, Kvarner, and Dalmatia typically utilize their working Sundays during the summer months (June through September). In contrast, retailers in continental areas such as Zagreb and Slavonia often schedule working Sundays during the autumn or the Advent period in December.

Certain establishments are exempt from these restrictions and are permitted to operate on Sundays, including gas stations, shops located within train stations, airports, hospitals, and hotels, as well as markets selling their own agricultural products. Major grocery chains like Konzum often employ a rotation strategy, where larger Super Konzum locations may remain open even if smaller neighborhood branches are closed.
