Croatia sees shifts in tourism trends and environmental developments

Croatia is experiencing diverse shifts in its tourism and environmental sectors. In the Istria region, a significant trend has emerged where approximately 80 percent of accommodation capacity is being sold via last-minute bookings, a sharp increase from the previous 20 percent. This shift is largely driven by travelers seeking better prices, forcing operators to adopt more flexible booking policies.

On the Pelješac peninsula and the southern coast, tourism is expanding into smaller coastal towns like Komarna and Klek, spurred by new infrastructure such as the Pelješac Bridge. Meanwhile, the nautical sector is seeing growth, with marina numbers up 7.9 percent in 2025 as travelers seek nature-centric experiences.

Environmentally, the sighting of a rare Mediterranean monk seal in the Adriatic suggests the waters still provide sufficient food for the endangered species. To protect its landscapes, Croatia has also expanded its AI-powered early fire detection network, increasing its surveillance from 50 to 75 cameras to monitor high-risk and protected areas against climate-related wildfire threats.
