The Croatian government announced new retail fuel prices effective early August 2026. The price of standard gasoline (Eurosuper 95) was set at €1.62 per litre, an increase of eight cents, while diesel rose to €1.75 per litre, up sixteen cents. The rise reflects higher excise taxes – about €0.42 per litre for gasoline and €0.33 for diesel – plus a 25 % VAT that adds roughly one‑fifth of the final price. Together, taxes and VAT account for about 46 % of the gasoline price and 39 % of the diesel price.

Business groups and industry representatives said the sudden announcement left them unable to adjust contracts, calling for more predictable tax adjustments. Minister of Economy Ante Šušnjar said the government does not expect another sharp price surge but is prepared to intervene in excise duties if market conditions require it. He noted that Croatia’s fuel prices remain among the lowest in the region; neighboring Bosnia‑Herzegovina and Slovenia have cheaper gasoline, while Austria and Italy are higher.

Across Europe, fuel prices have been volatile due to tensions in the Hormuz Strait and rising crude oil costs, but Croatia has managed to keep its prices relatively low compared with many other EU states.
