Croatia suicide rates: 497 deaths recorded last year
In observance of World Suicide Prevention Day, the Association Životna linija reported that 497 people committed suicide in Croatia last year. The figures include 407 men and 90 women. Data from the Ministry of the Interior indicates that more than 43 percent of these cases involved individuals older than 65 years.
According to the Croatian Institute of Public Health (HZJZ), the long-term suicide mortality rate in the country has been declining, decreasing by an average of 2.3 percent annually since 2001. This trend has been observed since 1999, contrasting with the mid-1980s and early 1990s when annual suicides exceeded 1,100.
Statistical trends show a widening gender gap, with the ratio of male to female suicides rising to 3.4 to 1 between 2016 and 2025. Hanging remains the most common method for both genders. While firearm-related suicides were more prevalent during wartime, they accounted for 16.8 percent of cases in 2025. Geographically, the highest numbers were recorded in the Zagreb and Split-Dalmatia police administrations.
