Croatia tackles labor shortages with large social work hiring drive and tourism workforce gap

The Croatian Social Work Agency announced a recruitment round for almost 200 permanent positions across regional offices, aiming to strengthen the social care system. Openings include a child‑protection lawyer and psychologist in Gospić and an administrative officer in Novalja, reflecting a response to staff deficits in the sector.

At the same time, the country's tourism industry is confronting a shortage of domestic seasonal workers. Employers estimate a need for around 65,000 seasonal staff but note a decline in Croatian participation, prompting greater reliance on foreign labor. A recent survey shows 53 % of respondents take seasonal jobs for higher pay, and while many rate conditions as good, workers call for higher wages, better housing, and stronger protection of rights.
