Croatia to amend Hunting Law over wildlife collision costs
Croatia is initiating amendments to the Hunting Law to address the rising costs of compensating damages caused by wildlife collisions. The Ministry has cited the continuous increase in vehicle-wildlife accidents, the resulting financial burden on the state budget and hunting authorities, and lengthy legal proceedings as primary reasons for the change.
Wild boar populations have become a significant issue on Croatian roads and in agriculture. Under the current system, if a driver is not in violation of traffic regulations, damages are reported to the Croatian Hunting Association and funded through a unified insurance policy. Since 2018, the state has allocated over 55 million euros for this purpose. The proposed legal changes aim to restructure how responsibility and compensation for these collisions are managed.
