Croatia to implement Crolibertas electronic toll system in 2027

Starting March 1, 2027, Croatian highways will transition to a new electronic toll collection system called Crolibertas. This shift will eliminate traditional toll booths, ramps, and the requirement for vehicles to stop for payment.

Under the new Law on Toll Collection, drivers must ensure they have a registered and valid means of payment linked to the system, such as an ENC device or through Automatic Number Plate Recognition (APRP). A significant risk identified is the expiration of bank cards. If a driver receives a replacement card from their bank but fails to manually update their payment details within the Crolibertas system, they may be considered improperly registered.

Unlike the current system, where drivers can resolve payment issues at a booth using cash or an alternative card, the new electronic portals will process vehicles without stopping. Failure to maintain valid payment information could result in significant costs, potentially reaching 720 euros in addition to unpaid tolls.
