Croatia to implement Crolibertas electronic toll system in 2027
Croatia is set to implement Crolibertas, a new electronic toll collection system, on March 1, 2027. This system will replace traditional toll booths with a method that combines Electronic Toll Collection (ENC) devices and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), allowing vehicles to pass through portals without stopping.
The new regulations introduce specific obligations and penalties. Drivers are legally required to remove any device from their vehicle that interferes with the proper functioning of the ENC or the electronic toll system. Failure to comply can result in fines ranging from 300 to 600 euros. The law clarifies that common electronics, such as mobile phones or navigation systems, are not prohibited unless they actively disrupt the tolling technology.
For vehicles registered in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the identification process will differ from EU-registered vehicles. While EU members utilize the EUCARIS system for cross-border data exchange regarding unpaid tolls, Bosnia and Herzegovina is not part of this specific mechanism. However, the new law still regulates cross-border data exchange for unpaid tolls to ensure vehicles do not become invisible to the Croatian system.
